The best way to get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen is by train. It is located on the main train route "Munich-Innsbruck" and can be reached from both cities within approx. 1.5 hours.
1. By Air (International Travel)
If you’re traveling from outside Germany, Austria or Switzerland, you can fly to a major airport. The nearest airports are:
- Munich Airport (Flughafen München , MUC): About 1.5-2 hours by car or train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
- Innsbruck Airport (INN) in Austria: Located around 1-1.5 hours away by car or train.
- Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland: A longer option, but still within a 3-4 hour drive if you'd like to rent a car.
From the airport, you can either use public transportation (trains or buses approx. 5 h) or rent a car.
2. By Train (Within Europe or from Airports)
From Munich:
- Direct trains (S-Bahn) run from Munich Airport to Munich Hauptbahnhof (central station), which take about 40 min.
- Direct trains run from Munich Hauptbahnhof (central station) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which take about 1.5 hours.
- Trains are frequent, and you can check schedules on the Deutsche Bahn (DB) website or app.
From Zurich or Innsbruck:
- Zurich: Take a train to Innsbruck, then transfer to a train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Depending on day and time, this journey takes about 5 - 6 hours in total.
- Innsbruck: Direct trains to Garmisch-Partenkirchen take about 1.5 hours.
