German-Indian joint research project "Vulnerability of Transportation Structures, Warning and Evacuation in Case of Major Inland Flooding" (Acronym: FloodEvac)

The German-Indian joint research project "FloodEvac" is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany. Coordinator of the project and lead of the sub-project "Assessment of Critial Transport Infrastructure" (TransInfra) is Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Norbert Gebbeken of the Institute of Engineering Mechanics and Structural Analysis. The consortium consists of six German and two Indian universities and the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW).
The project research on the improvement of safety of persons and infrastructure in case of major inland flooding is done in an international frame.
Methods, technologies and processes are developed and improved to get a better assessment of the transport infrastructure, which is vital for support and evacuation during a catastrophe. These methods, technologies and processes are merged into a training tool for flood scenarios. The remaining risk during a flood event as well as the utilization of robust optimization is taken into consideration to reduce the consequences of a flood catastrophe.
The sub project "TransInfra" deals with the development of methods to assess the transport infrastructure regarding its practicability. Therefore, the remaining load capacity of bridges have to be taken into account. As these methods are based on input data, monitoring and exploration methods are developed together with project partners.
