Systems Engineering

Customer needs are becoming increasingly demanding and diverse, which means that the development of technical systems is faced with growing challenges. Developers address these challenges through the use of networked and intelligent technologies, typically working in an interdisciplinary development context characterized by increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

Relevance

To meet these demanding customer needs, socio-cyber-physical systems or systems of systems are often employed. Developers must apply systemic and systematic approaches to be successful. This requires a mindset that enables the understanding and shaping of complex phenomena. In systems thinking, the overall task and the overall problem are always considered when working on individual sub-tasks. Systems thinking is an essential component of systems engineering, an interdisciplinary approach that enables the implementation of successful systems. Furthermore, in the development of such overarching systems, human-centered aspects are crucial, as factors beyond the physical product—such as fostering users’ emotional experiences—can contribute to value creation. These human-centered aspects must be considered when developing efficient and effective approaches to support the product development process, for which design thinking, as a human-centered approach, can also provide valuable support.

Problem Statement and Focus

The use of models within systems engineering aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the development process and forms the basis for model-based systems engineering (MBSE). MBSE is a formalized approach within systems engineering that focuses on the use of models to define, design, analyze, and document systems. This raises the question of how models can be used efficiently and effectively within systems engineering. Closely related is the challenge of utilizing MBSE for the mapping and analysis of data and information needs.
In this context, our research focuses particularly on the following topics:
Supporting classical development processes with systems engineering methods
- Integration of model-based systems engineering
- Creation and application of system models
- Integration of design thinking, systems thinking, and systems engineering
