Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Uwe M. Borghoff
Institute for Software Technology / Department of Computer Science (uwe.borghoff@unibw.de)
Uwe M. Borghoff studied computer science and mathematics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, where he obtained both his Diplom and doctoral degrees. In 1993, he was granted the venia legendi (habilitation) in computer science at TUM.
In 1994, he joined Xerox Research in Grenoble, France. During his tenure at Xerox, he served as senior scientist, project manager, and head of the Coordination Technology group. He was co-inventor of the Constraint-Based Knowledge Brokers, an innovative search engine architecture designed to query and cross-reference heterogeneous and multilingual databases using signed feature constraints. This technology was commercialized by Xerox around 1999 under the name Ask Once and was subsequently acquired by Documentum in 2004.
In 1998, Borghoff was appointed to the faculty of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, where he holds a full professorship in computer science at the Institute for Software Technology. His research focuses on digital long-term archiving, addressing the challenges associated with preserving electronic data over extended periods. As part of this work, he established and continues to operate datArena on the university campus.
From 2002 to 2004, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science. He subsequently held the position of Vice President of the University from 2004 to 2024, completing seven terms in office. Between 2023 and 2024, he additionally served as Chief Information Officer (CIO).
Since 2008, Borghoff has been the founding director of the Campus Advanced Study Center (CASC), the university’s center for professional education. From 2017 to 2023, he was also the founding director of the Center for Intelligence and Security Studies (CISS). In this capacity, and in collaboration with Jan-Hendrik Dietrich, he served as program director of the Master of Intelligence and Security Studies (MISS), a joint program offered by the Federal University of Administrative Sciences and the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. This program remains unique in Germany in integrating all intelligence services and the Bundeswehr.
On October 10, 2024, during the Dies Academicus, he was awarded the Grand University Medal by the President of the University in recognition of more than two decades of service as Vice President and his outstanding contributions to the institution.
