On August 17, the annual institute excursion of IMCS led its employees to Inzell. In a relaxed atmosphere, everyone enjoyed a delightful round of soccer golf at the Soccerpark, which brought about cheerful spirits. Following this, the group had lunch at Lindlbauer-Kaiserschmarrn Café, where a hearty Kaiserschmarrn awaited the participants, providing the energy for the rest of the day.

The chair of IMCS was again invited to participate in the “FE ohne Schnee” event this year, which took place in Kleinwalsertal. Our postdoc Ivo Steinbrecher was able to present its work on mixed-dimensional modeling.

Our colleagues Max Firmbach and Dr.-Ing. Matthias Mayr have attended the Xth International Conference on Coupled Problems in Science and Engineering, which was held in Chania/Crete, Greece on June 5-7,2023, and have presented research findings from IMCS.

In this preprint, we propose a fully coupled partitioned scheme to embed fibers (modeled by beams) into three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow. The discretization of the truly 1D/3D coupling constraints utilizes a mortar-type approach and a penalty regularization. We solve the coupled problem by either an Aitken acceleration scheme or by a Matrix-Free Newton-Krylov (MFNK) approach.

Two new conference proceedings contributions on "Hybrid Digital Twins: A Proof of Concept for Reinforced Concrete Beams" and "Computational challenges in mixed-dimensional beam/solid coupling" have been published in Proceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.
