The institute is responsible for the complete development of autonomous robotic systems, starting with the sensors and actuators, the programming of the microcontroller and the development of applications in ROS. The systems are not only used in research but also in teaching. In the Master's module “Robotics Practice”, students can create their own applications for a robot vehicle. The aim is to explore an unknown area, create a map for this area and then navigate autonomously in this area. The Speedy vehicle is used in the course.

In addition to control by prefabricated processors, the use of FPGA circuits as a SoC system (system on a chip) is being investigated. Controlled by an integrated processor (softcore or HPS), co-hardware modules are created and controlled using a hardware description language (HDL).
