Cooperation competence in technology transfer –
Identification and Evaluation of Partners based on Patent Information

(2023 – 2026)

The “KiTIE” project is developing an IT-based tool for identifying cooperation partners for non-university research institutions based on patent information. The aim is to enable effective and efficient partner identification in technology transfer and to promote transparent and autonomous participation of all stakeholders.

Project Description

In the context of intensifying societal challenges and increasingly complex technological issues, efficient technology transfer is becoming more and more important, especially for large research institutions. However, traditional approaches to technology transfer, which are often based on personal networks or chance discoveries, are often no longer sufficient. This is where the KiTIE project comes in: The aim is to develop and prototype-test an IT-based tool that is able to identify potential cooperation partners based on patent information and usage.

The tool is intended to enable the efficient and effective identification and evaluation of potential partners in order to promote the cooperative exploitation of (patented) technologies. It aims to identify both the potential and the challenges of collaboration with industrial partners ex ante with little effort and to enable a well-founded preliminary assessment of collaboration candidates. To this end, knowledge and data engineering methods are used to analyze large volumes of data and extract relevant information.

The project's work plan initially focuses on identifying and evaluating potential cooperation partners. The selection criteria include technological expertise, relational characteristics, long-term goals and access to other innovation partners. In the next step, the IT-based tool will be tested as a prototype and skills for its use will be developed. This also includes the continuous adaptation of the tool to the needs of users, the protection of data, software and systems and the creation of best practice examples to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the tool.

The result of the project is a powerful IT-based transfer tool that enables an efficient and effective search for and evaluation of technology exploitation opportunities and partners. It can take technology transfer to a new level by accelerating and clarifying the identification and evaluation of potential partners, which can lead to greater economic success. It also makes it possible to compensate for the lack of opportunities to make personal contact, such as at trade fairs, conferences or transfer workshops. In the long term, the tool can also facilitate the initiation of collaborations with potential users.

KiTIE is a joint project involving a total of five partners. The institutions involved are the Leibniz Institute for New Materials, the GSI Helmholtz-Zentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf e.V., Kiel University and the Bundeswehr University Munich.
