UniBw AI Retreat 2024
17 December 2024
From December 10 to 12, Moritz Hennen, Yeong Su Lee and Hendrik Bothe took part in the UniBw AI Retreat (official name: GCMC-UniBw AI/ML PhD & Policy Workshop). The three-day event took place on the grounds of the George C. Marshall Center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The retreat offered doctoral students in the field of artificial intelligence the opportunity to exchange ideas on methodologies and practical applications and to come into contact with experts from the field of security studies.
The first day was initially characterized by a speech and subsequent discussion on the dangers and opportunities of the rapid development of AI systems. In the afternoon, a poster session took place in which the doctoral students presented their dissertation topics. Many constructive discussions took place in this context. An exchange on further topics was possible in the evening at the “Ice-Breaker” event.

The following day began with a workshop on PyTorch, a framework for implementing and training AI models. The workshop was held by Dr. Thomas Viehmann (former PyTorch Core Developer). The participants were able to optimize and extend AI models using examples. The day ended with a presentation on radicalization through socialization in online games.
On the third and final day, the topic of “Open Science”, which stands for accessible research results and reproducibility, was explored in greater depth. After an informative presentation by Dr. Carolina Natel de Moura, the participants created posters in small groups, which were then discussed in a lively exchange. This was followed by a panel discussion on “Geopolitical Challenges and Strategic Competition: Artificial Intelligence and Global Security”, from which a discussion on available resources and ethical justifiability emerged.
